Monk Fryston – 2
Ponte
are just Champion!
This fixture is always exciting and this match didn’t disappoint.
Chandler Docherty, Jake Tonkinson, Jimmy Beckett and Lewis Schofield worked hard against a pacey attack as some strong challenges and interceptions were expertly timed. Jordan Brown and Callum Brain worked the flanks tremendously, feeding some great balls into the forwards Oliver Burton and Owen McCluskey, whilst Josh Bucknall and Joe Threlfall battled non stop in the middle.
The Monk
Fryston net lead a charmed life, as Ponte were getting a lot of joy against a
five man defence and should have put the game to bed within the first twenty
minutes. Brain hit some stinging shots from the edge of the area,
Ponte knew that a win guaranteed the League and they set off sharply, Threlfall picked up a Brain pass to drive into the Fryston area with power and slip a shot under the keeper before McCluskey hit his second of the day and 40th of the season. Morgan Farrar, Luke Langton, Louis Keenan and Jack Hinchcliffe all contributed to what was a fantastic win to secure their well deserved League Championship with a game to spare. Jake Gaskell was the supporter’s player after pulling off some superb saves with the Referees mom going to Threlfall.

Garforth Villa – 3
Pontefract Sports & Social – 3
Ponte dropped their first point of the season after a cracking game of football between these two sides. They dominated large parts of this game but were up against a tough and well drilled, Villa outfit.
Joe Threlfall and Callum Brain both had early efforts go wide and with pressure mounting on the home side Oliver Burton popped up to slot in the first goal of the day for Ponte. The back line of Jake Gaskell, Jake Tonkinson, Chandler Docherty, Jimmy Beckett and Lewis Schofield looked comfortable as they cleared up well, so it was a shock when against the run of play, Garforth broke through, scoring a well taken goal to bring them level. This gave Ponte a kick and the midfield of Josh Bucknall and Threlfall were having a great battle with their Villa counterparts as Ponte played some good football throughout the team. Threlfall played in a great ball to Owen McCluskey to score Pontes second and inform Jordan Brown caused Villa all sorts of problems, it was from one of his trade mark corners that the lively Burton scored his second and Pontes third to bring Ponte in at half time leading 3-1.
A change round in the second half and Jed Wilkinson was on to menace an impressive Villa defence, it wasn’t long before Ponte had a free kick awarded on the edge of the area, Bucknall hitting a wicked shot that brought a great save out of the Villa keeper. This gave Villa and their vocal supporters a lift, they went on to score a contentious goal following a free kick in the middle of the park, with his back turned away from play, the referee began to lecture three of our players (one of them was laid on the floor!) effectively taking them out of the game whilst at the same time Villa played straight on resulting in the goal, which the ref allowed to stand. Much head scratching and questions could be asked about that!! Louis Keenan, Luke Langton and Morgan Farrar were thrown into the fray but Villa smelt something out of this game and began to pressure Ponte, it looked obvious that Ponte were still smarting from the last goal and Villa got the equaliser after their player hit a powerful, goal bound shot that was just touched in from one of the Ponte lads, this was harsh on Ponte but it was no less than what the Villa players deserved after battling all the way to the final whistle.
Supporter’s players were awarded to the tough duo Chandler Docherty and Jimmy Beckett whilst Oliver Burton took the Referees MOM after a committed display.

Methley
– 1
A
comfortable win as the back line of Jake Tonkinson, Lewis Schofield, Jack
Hinchcliffe and Luke Langton looked impenetrable as Josh Bucknall, Joe
Threlfall, Oliver Burton and Jordan Brown ran Methley ragged in the middle with
Callum Brain and Owen McCluskey pulling the Methley defence apart as Ponte
scored six without reply in the first half. They came by way of a brace from
Burton, a hat trick from McCluskey and one from Threlfall.
The
introduction of Chandler Docherty, Jimmy Beckett and Jake Gaskell, who came out
of the nets, added to the visitor’s woe. Gaskell hitting a superb shot, from
the edge of the area for Ponte’s seventh. Ponte then took their foot off the
gas knowing the game was won and Methley capitalised to get a well taken
consolation goal. The Supporters player awards went to Jordan Brown, whose
accuracy created two of the goals and the influential Joe Threlfall. The
Referees man of the match went to Callum Brain, catching the eye with his neat
touch and vision.

Barlby

Pontefract

Not
the greatest game of football on a one of the smallest pitches in the league but
it was still a win for the league leaders.
It
was slow and scrappy with Ponte camped in the Barlby half for the majority of
this game, the break for Ponte came when Callum Brain put the ball into the edge
of the area for Josh Bucknall, who scored with an excellent strike. Oliver
Burton wasn’t to be outdone when he scored a great goal courtesy of an Owen
McCluskey pass followed shortly by Louis Keenan who scored after some good play
from Joe Threlfall and McCluskey. Jordan Brown’s skill on the ball and perfect
deliveries from corners were a feature of this game but further chances for
Ponte went begging until McCluskey hit a thunderbolt for Pontes fourth. Jack
Hinchcliffe and Luke Langton had very good games along with the defence of Lewis
Schofield, Jimmy Beckett, Jake Tonkinson, Chandler Docherty and Jake Gaskell.
Jordan
Brown and Josh Bucknall came out of the game with great credit to take a share
of the Supporters award along with Owen McCluskey who also scooped the Referees
award.

Ponte played
This was by no means an easy task for Ponte, both teams settled well into their games and it was Cas who looked to be taking the lead when their attacker broke through Pontes defence and found himself one on one with Jake Gaskell who bravely threw himself at the advancing attackers feet to clear the ball and snuff out the threat.
Jordan Brown then created space and released a very good effort that just went wide of the post, turning provider he put a great ball through for Owen McCluskey who only managed to skew the shot wide but it was looking promising for Ponte and it felt only a matter of time before the goal would come as Brown, Josh Bucknall, Joe Threlfall and Callum Brain provided some telling balls into the lively forwards McCluskey and Oliver Burton.
Chandler
Docherty had yet another great game, playing with a dogged determination he
worked a good ball through for the impressive
It wasn’t long before Threlfall scored Pontes second and as Ponte pushed on further they were awarded a penalty after Docherty was upended in the box, he placed the ball and took a long run up, sending the keeper the wrong way he narrowly put the ball wide which was very unlucky as it would have been the goal he thoroughly deserved.
It was a good battle in midfield as Josh Bucknall and Threlfall did the spade work, they worked non stop to control the play and it looked like Ponte had got their third as Brain attempted a decent long range shot but it was well saved by the keeper.
A bit of scrappy play followed and Cas got themselves back into the game with a great goal from their lively striker but they were up against Docherty, Jimmy Beckett, Lewis Schofield and the commanding Jake Tonkinson in defence who restricted the visitors to take Ponte in at half time 2-1 to the good.
A few words from Carl were needed to settle matters as he sent the lads out for the second half.
The speedy McCluskey went on a good run and kept his composure in his one on one with the keeper to coolly slot the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Schofield then tried his luck after a scramble in the Cas box saw the ball come out to him on the edge of the area, he lashed a good shot over everyone only to see it curl wide of the top corner!
Some classic Ponte passing football between Threlfall and Brown resulted in McCluskey getting pontes fourth.
More pressure from the home side saw Cas fail to clear their lines; Brain reacted first to side foot a sneaky shot past the keeper for Pontes fifth.
Jake Gaskell showed more of his ability with a fantastic double saves to deny Cas before the free scoring McCluskey wrapped up the goals adding a further two to his tally, one of which came courtesy of a fantastic ball from left back Jack Hinchcliffe.
Luke Langton and Louis Keenan also slotted into the game seamlessly to keep Ponte marching on for the title.
The Referees man of the match went to Jake Tonkinson who gave another commanding and gritty display, he was also voted the Supporters player pushed closely by a very impressive Oliver Burton.

Whitley wolves – 1
This was never going to be a text book footballing display as both teams had to contend with a heavy, energy sapping pitch.
Whitley took the lead through an early penalty where as Ponte didn’t convert the superior number of chances they had in the first half.
The second half started brightly, straight from kick-off Ponte went on the offensive, with Owen McCluskey scoring the equaliser then Joe Threlfall took on the advancing Whitley keeper and coolly slid the ball into the far corner. Ponte were still having the lion’s share of opportunities in front of goal with Callum Brain forcing the Whitley keeper into making some good saves. Josh Bucknall ran tirelessly in a central midfield role with Jordan Brown and Oliver Burton working the wings.
Whitley were up against Jimmy Beckett in the centre of defence, who was in inspirational form along with fellow defenders Jake Tonkinson, Jack Hinchcliffe and Lewis Schofield who frustrated the visiting attackers all game. Whitley did bite back with a superb mazy run from one of their players but Jake Gaskell was alert to make a great save to deny them.
McCluskey then scored his second followed up by a well worked goal from Chandler Docherty after Lewis Schofield had set him up. Luke Langton and Morgan Farrar came on to make their mark, giving their best to help gain another 3 points for the league leaders.
The Referees and supporters man of the match were well won by Jimmy Beckett, who had a fantastic stand out game.
Squad: Jake Gaskell, Lewis Schofield, Jake Tonkinson, Jimmy Beckett, Jack Hinchcliffe, Callum Brain, Joe Threlfall, Josh Bucknall, Oliver Burton, Jordan Brown, Owen McCluskey; Morgan Farrar, Chandler Docherty, Luke Langton.

Snaith – 2
Pontefract Sports & Social – 8
This was Pontes first game back after the enforced winter break and they were looking to carry on their strong run into the second half of the season.
As was expected the game started slowly, with Ponte having the better of the early exchanges but they kept coming up against a strong central defender who had a cracking game.
Ponte had a wake up call as Snaith took the lead when they put a ball through a static Ponte defence, two Snaith players were adjudged offside by the linesman and the flag went up but as Ponte players stood the referee waved play on and the Snaith winger hit a good shot to put his team one up, a harsh lesson for all Ponte players to always play to the whistle.
It was the kick start Ponte needed, Joe Threlfall replying almost immediately following good work from Jake Tonkinson with Jed Wilkinson hitting his first of the day to put Ponte into the driving seat.
Oliver Burton had a good game, looking to run at the Snaith defence at every opportunity to cause the home side problems. But the Snaith winger was also causing problems, Jimmy Beckett and Morgan Farrar gave their all to minimise the threat but the Snaith player eventually found joy to score another good goal to level up matters.
Ponte decided enough was enough and began to cut loose, Callum Brain’s shot from inside the box was parried back to him and in the scramble that ensued, he coolly knocked the ball back into the path of Threlfall who rammed his second of the day home. Owen McCluskey then came up with Pontes fourth, following some good strong play from Luke Langton. Wilkinson then completed his well deserved brace just before half time.
Ponte set out in the second half with a three goal advantage and when Jordan Brown lobbed a fantastic shot into the top corner of Snaith’s net it looked all over for a Snaith side who had given their all. Chandler Docherty and Jack Hinchcliffe gave strong performances when they came on along with Louis Keenan, who got onto the end of a Wilkinson ball to hit a cool goal with McCluskey getting his second and Pontes eighth goal to finish the match.
The referee’s man of the match went to Threlfall, who as usual caught the eye with a strong, all round display. The supporter’s player was jointly awarded to Wilkinson, who gave a class performance in midfield and Tonkinson who led by example and marshalled the back line superbly.
A special and very well deserved mention goes to stand in goalie Lewis Schofield, who took the gloves with no argument and put in a good display for his team.

Monk Fryston
- 2
Ponte finish
the decade sitting on top of the table having taken maximum points from the
first half of the season.
Ponte had the
lions share of possession in this game but found it tough to break down this
physical Monk Fryston team who defended well - putting almost every outfield
player behind the ball.
Morgan Farrar,
Jack Hinchcliffe, Luke Langton and Chandler Docherty worked hard for the team
and Jake Gaskell had a superb game in the Ponte nets as he commanded his area
with great effect. Lewis Schofield had an excellent game at right back, getting
stuck in and playing some nice no nonsense footy along side Jake Tonkinson, Josh
Bucknall and Jimmy Beckett who all had good games.
The deadlock
was broken when a clever knock over the defence by Callum Brain was nicely
placed into the path of Owen McCluskey, who beat the keeper to put us one up.
Monk Fryston answered shortly after and left Ponte rueing their missed
opportunities when the visitors took the lead just before half time.
Ponte came out
in the second half and immediately got to grips with the highly charged Monk
Fryston team, despite one or two of our lads carrying knocks. Jordan Brown
battled well and began to get some room down the right and it wasn’t long
before we were picking holes through the Fryston defence, it looked like Brain
had equalised only to slice his shot wide but we were testing the keeper in
droves and when Oliver Burton played a neat ball through for Joe Threlfall, he
rifled his shot into the back of the net, this spurred the lads on as they smelt
victory and when McCluskey and Beckett worked a great corner it gave McCluskey
room to launch a curling shot into the top corner that gave Ponte all three
points.
This was a
tough but good game for the lads as we look forward to meeting Monk Fryston
again in our first match of 2010.
The
supporter’s player went to Schofield with Gaskell and Brown jointly wining the
Referees mom.

Garforth Villa – 2
This promised to be a tough top of the table clash and the game didn’t disappoint as Garforth took the match to the home side. Ponte had opportunities to go ahead without much luck in the first half but Garforth made no mistake to take a 0-1 lead. This spurred the home side on and they drew level through Jed Wilkinson. Jake Gaskell was kept busier then usual in the Ponte nets and had a fine game catching the eye with some superb saves as the back line of Morgan Farrar, Jake Tonkinson, Josh Bucknall and Jimmy Beckett all did well to bring the game in at half time all even.
With everything to play for the home side pushed on to bag the full points, Oliver Burton squared a nice ball to Callum Brain who scored to put Ponte into the driving seat with a Joe Threlfall goal shortly after from a good through ball from Jordan Brown. Ponte were forcing the Garforth keeper into making some good saves with Chandler Docherty, Owen McCluskey and Bucknall all going close. Lewis Schofield, Jack Hinchcliffe and Luke Langton came on to make their mark with Langton scoring Pontes fourth before Garforth got their second late on. The Supporters and Referees man of the match went to the ever impressive Josh Bucknall who won everything in the air and was rock solid at the back for Ponte.
Squad: Gaskell, Farrar, Tonkinson, Bucknall, Beckett, Brown, Brain, Threlfall, Wilkinson, McCluskey, Burton: Langton, Schofield, Docherty, Hinchcliffe.

Snaith – 1
Ponte shot to the top of the league with this win despite the heroic efforts of the very impressive Snaith keeper. Josh Bucknall and Jake Tonkinson won everything in the air in their central defensive role while Jack Hinchcliffe and Jimmy Beckett looked composed, it meant Jake Gaskell had little to do but was alert to make some great saves when called upon.
The first chance fell to Jed Wilkinson who chipped a cool shot over the keeper but a Snaith defender just managed to clear off the line. Great work from Chandler Docherty gave Joe Threlfall an opportunity but saw his shot pushed wide with Wilkinson and Callum Brain following with almost carbon copy chances. The post bar and keeper all kept Ponte at bay but fire enough shots and the goals will come, Owen McCluskey with the first before Threlfall’s cross was glanced in off McCluskey’s head. Wilkinson had a powerful shot parried but followed it up to put it into the back of the net. Ponte then lapsed and allowed a Snaith player to take on four players unchallenged before slipping a cool shot past Gaskell. The score at half time was a respectable 3-1.
It has to be said the Snaith keeper was excellent throughout but couldn’t contain the Ponte onslaught in the second half. Jordan Brown created some good openings and Threlfall scored two within minutes of the restart, Brain then rounded the defender and scored a good goal but the flag had gone up for a Ponte player on the far side and so the goal was disallowed. Selby League debutant Oliver Burton then came on a scored a nice brace before McCluskey completed his hat trick. Wilkinson notched his second of the game and was then brought down in the box and awarded a penalty. Brain stepped up to the spot and powered his shot into the corner.
Dillon Muggleton had a good game and did well, being very unlucky not to score with a couple of efforts. Beckett’s power troubled the Snaith defence and scored a well deserved goal into the top corner from a great strike on the edge of the box. Chandler Docherty’s good work was awarded when he scored the last goal of the game.
The hardworking Josh Bucknall and Jake Tonkinson were awesome and jointly won the Referees man of the match award with the supporter’s player going to Joe Threlfall pushed closely by Bucknall.
Squad: Gaskell,

Whitley Wolves – 2
Pontefract Sports & Social – 9
Ponte started brightly and went one up within minutes after Callum Brain played a nice ball through to put in Jordan Brown who finished with clinical precision. Whitley pressed back and Morgan Farrar and Luke Langton had to work hard to contain the Whitley wide men. Jake Gaskell had to be alert in goals making some good saves and was relieved when a penalty awarded to Whitley was put wide, although Whitley pressure paid off as they pulled one back shortly after from a very well taken shot. Good work from Jed Wilkinson put in Owen McCluskey only to see the shot glance over but they linked again to feed Brown who secured his brace with yet another crisp finish. Louis Keenan was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when the Whitley keeper pulled off a fantastic save to tip his effort over the bar.
At this point the game was close and Ponte were glad to come in at half time in the lead, after a rallying team talk they set out to put the game beyond Whitley.
Jimmy Beckett stopped a Whitley attack and played a lovely up field ball to McCluskey who gave the ball a little dink to Wilkinson who finished well. Brown then played in McCluskey to get Pontes fourth before Brain tried his luck with a good shot that inched over; he then created some space and picked out McCluskey to put the ball into the net. The fearless central defensive partnership of Jake Tonkinson and Josh Bucknall is a real force to be reckoned with as they were composed on the ball and always on hand to clear any danger. Brains sharp passing was a feature as Ponte picked holes in the Whitley defence and he turned provider again when he played in McCluskey who went on to get his fourth after Brown had dazzled with some fancy footwork. Brain picked out Wilkinson who put a perfect ball across the face of the goal but as Dillon Muggleton arrived on the back post he just knocked it wide. Bucknall was unlucky as he came up for a corner he got his head onto a good cross only to glance it wide of the post. Jack Hinchcliffe worked hard for the team and Chandler Docherty scored a very well taken goal followed by Lewis Schofield who planted the ball into the back of the net after he out paced the over worked Whitley defence. Farrar forced the keeper in into pulling off a great save as he unleashed one of his thunderbolts. The referee’s mom went to Jed Wilkinson ,with the supporter’s player going to Jordan Brown, Owen McCluskey and Josh Bucknall who all gave great displays.
Squad: Gaskell, Langton, Tonkinson, Bucknall, Farrar, Brown, Brain, Wilkinson, Schofield, McCluskey, Docherty; Hinchcliffe, Beckett, Keenan, Muggleton.

Methley – 2
Pontefract Sports & Social – 9
This was another emphatic victory for Ponte in the First Round of the Cup.
During a morning of extremely windy conditions Ponte kept the ball down and played some great flowing football.
The first goal came after a slick pass from Joe Threlfall to Owen McCluskey who slotted the ball coolly past the advancing Methley keeper.
Threlfall then helped himself to a well deserved goal before setting up another after winning the ball in midfield he put in a great cross to Callum Brain to score on the half volley.
There was some great moves all over the pitch, one stand out came via Morgan Farrar in defence who controlled the ball well and played it to Jake Tonkinson up the left wing who then spotted Brain in space in the middle, the resulting powerful shot looked certain for the top corner but the Methley keeper somehow managed to tip over.
Methley then had a good ten minute spell and credit to them they scored two good goals to bring the game back within reach but it wasn’t to be as Ponte continued to play quick football.
Josh Bucknall battled well in midfield breaking up many Methley attacks, stealing the ball he played in Threlfall who delivered another perfect cross to McCluskey to score Pontes fourth.
Jordan Brown and Jake Tonkinsons work on the wings was key as they helped to stretch Methley with Brown’s tracking back also an important feature, he stopped a sure fire goal after the Methley striker burst through and looked to pull the trigger on a shot, he made an expertly timed tackle to knick the ball and then kept his composure to slip a great ball up field to Tonkinson to clear the danger.
Lewis Schofield and Dillon Muggleton also made some important timely challenges in front of Jake Gaskell who pulled off some good saves, one that caught the eye was when a thunderous shot came over the defence and Gaskell just managed to parry the shot away but as it dropped into the path of the Methley attack Gaskell bravely threw himself onto the ball leading Ponte in at half time 5-2 up.
Ponte started the second half in the same form, Threlfall picking out Brain who showed great vision as he put an excellent ball into the box for Jed Wilkinson, who then played a reverse pass to Brown, who forced the Methley keeper into pulling off a superb save.
The excellent work continued with Threlfall and McCluskey linking well, feeding in Wilkinson who delivered a great ball across the box, Brain threw himself in at the back post but just failed to make the all important connection.
One of the goals of the game when Wilkinson, with back to goal, received the ball on the edge of the box and flicked a magnificent back healed pass into the path of Chandler Docherty who rifled the shot into the back of the net.
Callum Brain then bagged his brace after Brown left Methley at sixes and sevens when he switched play expertly with an across field pass to Threlfall who then played another cross field ball back for Brain to hammer home.
Wilkinson was in inspirational form and made an excellent run down the wing with the ball, showing great skill as he shook off tackle after tackle he drove into the box and struck the ball in on a very tight angle but saw the shot skim agonisingly wide.
Luke Langton was unlucky not to get onto the score sheet with a super long range drive that just went wide of the mark.
Farrar did put away a beauty, after good work from Jimmy Beckett he found himself one on one with the keeper and keeping his cool he struck the ball with venom into the net.
The last say of the game came from Wilkinson who collected the ball deep in his own half, he turned and burst up field and with sublime fast foot work and skill he left eight would be tacklers stranded, thundering a fantastic shot into the net that spectators from both sides duly applauded.
The referee’s man of the match went to Owen McCluskey with Jed Wilkinson and Callum Brain sharing the Supporters man of the match award.

Selby Town U11’s – 1
Pontefract Sports & Social U11’s – 3
This was a below par performance from Ponte in the first league game of the season but they still managed to come away with the win.
Selby came into this game on the back of a heavy defeat the last time these two teams met and were out to settle a score; they started the sharpest and took the lead early in the game with a well taken strike from their pacey forward.
Pontes poor passing and movement gifted Selby a lot of the possession with only glimpses of the good football they can produce and they can thank the defence of Jake Tonkinson, the commanding presence of Josh Bucknall and Morgan Farrar for denying Selby further opportunities with Jake Gaskell making some crucial interceptions.
Pontes first shot of the day came from Jimmy Beckett as he broke up field but the Selby keeper was up to the challenge and saved well. Ponte were then awarded a penalty after a Selby hand ball and up stepped Joe Threlfall who thundered a shot into the back of the net to bring the game level. A break down the left from Callum Brain was cut short when he was brought down, the resulting free kick was well taken but just inched wide of the post.
Some harsh words at half time sparked some life into the Ponte lads and when Threlfall took the Selby defence on with a fantastic mazy run he created the space to put in a great cross that found Owen McCluskey on the back post to slot home Pontes second. Jordan Brown’s well struck shot, after linking well with Threlfall, was just tipped over by the Selby Keeper before Brain took a chance by lobbing the keeper to make it three for Ponte. Morgan Farrar was awarded the supporters and referees man of the match for another strong game.
Squad:- Gaskell, Beckett, Tonkinson, Bucknall, Farrar, Brown, Threlfall, Brain, Schofield, Docherty, McCluskey; Keenan, Muggleton and Langton.

Selby Town were left stunned as Ponte put away fourteen goals in this Selby League Preliminary Cup Round. Selby enjoyed some early possession but Ponte were just too strong for the visitors in all areas of the pitch, Jimmy Beckett, Josh Bucknall, Jake Tonkinson and Morgan Farrar kept it solid at the back in front of Jake Gaskell with Jordan Brown, Joe Threlfall, Callum Brain and Jed Wilkinson commanding the middle of the park, Owen McCluskey and Chandler Docherty kept the Selby Defence busy with subs Jack Hinchcliffe, Lewis Schofield and Luke Langton all making important contributions. Scorers were Threlfall (6), McCluskey (6), Docherty and Bucknall. The referee’s man of the match went to Farrar and the Supporters player was a tight call with Threlfall just piping Bucknall. Ponte now face Methley in the first round.
Squad: Gaskell, Beckett, Bucknall, Tonkinson, Farrar, Brown, Threlfall, Brain, Wilkinson, Docherty, McCluskey; Schofield, Hinchcliffe, Langton.
